Winter Travel Tips: Winter Skin & Hair Care

How to care for your hair and skin during winter vacation.
Winter Skin Care
  • Oil-Based Moisturizer. The harsh cold weather can result in dry, irritated skin and cause eczema to flare. Switch to an oil-based moisturizer and moisturize frequently. Keep your moisturizing cream on hand to handle sudden skin aggravation while you're on the move.

The drier your skin type, the more oil content you should look out for. Ointment forms of moisturizers are more effective against cold and dry weather conditions compared to cream and lotion formulas. This is because the water-in-oil emulsion forms a protective layer on the skin and keeps it moisturized.
    Moisturize After Bathing
Apply your moisturizing cream or lotion immediately after bathing and toweling dry. This will help seal in the moisture. Even the central heating indoors can be drying too.

  • Creamier Cleansers. Unless your skin type is very oily, you should switch to gentle, creamy cleansers that won't leave your face feeling taut and dry after washing.

  • Body Lotions. Your body needs protection too. Apply body lotion regularly, concentrating on exposed parts like the ears and neck, and dry patches like elbows and heels. Nails can suffer too, so don't forget your cuticles.

  • Lip Balm. Use a highly moisturizing lip balm with vitamin E to keep the lips from chapping.

  • Suncreen. Don't forget about your regular sunscreen. Even during winter, you need to protect exposed skin from the sun's rays with sunscreen that provides at least SPF15 protection.

  • Gloves. Protect your hands from the extreme cold and dry air. Chapped hands can be a pain.

  • Drink Water. 6-8 glasses of water a day will help combat the drying effects on your skin.
