Expressed Milk: Breastfeeding for Working Mothers

Guide to expressing and storing breast milk.

Safe expressed milk storage

  • It is important to wash your hands thoroughly before pumping, and sterilise the bottles before use. Storing the expressed milk in feed size amounts in sterilised bottles will prevent wastage.

  • Expressed milk can last for 24 to 48 hours in the refrigerator (at 4 °C), or up to 6 months in the freezer compartment (at 0 °C). Label all the bottles with the dates and time of collection.

Safe thawing/ defrosting

To feed your baby with the expressed milk, simply thaw and warm the milk by standing the bottle in warm water for 10 minutes. Frozen breast milk can first be transferred to the refrigerator for thawing before putting the bottle in warm water just before feeding. Do not boil the milk or warm in a microwave oven.

Do not refreeze thawed milk as it may be contaminated. Discard any excess milk left in the bottle after feeding.
